The New Zealand women's basketball team has beaten Mali 76-72 in their opening match at the Olympic Games in Beijing.
New Zealand struggled to shrug off the African challenge after opening up a commanding 42-33 lead at halftime.
Mali fought back to win both the third and fourth quarters but not by enough to head off the New Zealanders.
