Watney breaks free of chasing group at US PGA Championship

The American Nick Watney has broken free of the chasing pack to open up a three-stroke lead, after the third round of the U.S. PGA Golf Championship, at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

Watney had eight birdies in his third round total of a six under-par 66, to be 13-under par for the tournament.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy tied for second with American Dustin Johnson at ten under but nine players are within five strokes of Watney.

World number one Tiger Woods birdied his last two holes to finish the third round tied for 31st at three under par.

The winners of this year's last two majors, British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen and U.S. Open winner Graeme McDowell, both missed the cut.
