Villa director deplores O'Neill exit

Aston Villa director Charles Krulak has slammed manager Martin O'Neill's decision to quit the club just days before the start of the English Premier League season.

O'Neill resigned yesterday, reportedly because of a breakdown in his relationship with Villa's American owner Randy Lerner over having to sell his best players and not being given enough money for new signings.

But Krulak says O'Neill received full financial backing during his four years in charge of the Midlands club and knew players' wages had to be brought into line with revenue.

The former United States Marine Corps Commandant says although O'Neill did a good job for Villa apparently he was unwilling to help address the wage-to-revenue issue.
