Five clubs fined for cap breaches

The National Rugby League has fined five clubs for 2009 salary cap breaches.

But all the breaches pale in comparison to the Melbourne Storm cap scandal that has rocked the NRL.

So do the fines, the biggest being $25,000 and $22,500 for Parramatta and the Dragons.

The Broncos were fined $17,000, the Sydney Roosters $7246 and Canberra $1996.

The NRL chief executive David Gallop says the major investigation at Melbourne meant it took a little longer than normal to complete the annual reviews at all clubs.

Gallop says it's encouraging that the largest of the fines for an undisclosed guarantee at Parramatta relates to the 2008 season and that most of last year's breaches were technical, not deceptive.
