History was made in the trans-tasman netball championship last night as the New South Wales became the first team to complete the round robin unbeaten with a decisive 56-38 victory over fellow finalists, the Southern Steel in Sydney.
In the final game of the 2010 regular season, both teams had booked their top-four spots in the Finals Series, but both had something riding on the outcome of the game..... the Swifts were aiming to keep their stunning unbeaten record, and the Steel were desperate to win the match to finish third and host a semifinal.
Instead the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic host the Steel in the sudden death semi-final and the Swifts host the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the major semi-final.
Meanwhile the Central Pulse finished their season with a 49-48 loss to the Melbourne Vixens in Porirua.
The Pulse led at half time, it was level at three-quarter time, before the homeside made some costly turnovers which saw the visitors home by one.
The Pulse finish the season with just one win, but avoid the wooden spoon for the first time, which went to the Canterbury Tactix.
