Whincup on front row with Courtney sixth fastest

Holden's Jamie Whincup has responded to James Courtney's challenge to his championship lead, putting his car on the front row of the grid for Sunday's V8 Supercar race at Winton.

Courtney, who trails Whincup by three points in the championship standings, will start from sixth on the grid, but is coming off a win in Saturday's opening race in north-east Victoria.

Meanhwile, Holden's Rick Kelly trumped both drivers in this mornings qualifying to snare pole position with the quickest lap ever recorded around the track.

Steven Richards is the best placed New Zealander and will start from 10th position.

Greg Murphy qualified 16th while Shane van Gisbergen, who finished fifth in Saturday's first race, will begin from 19th on the grid.
