The former world tennis number one Maria Sharapova, who's only recently returned from a drug ban, has ousted second Simona Halep in the first round of the US Open in New York.
Sharapova, playing in her first grand slam event since returning from the ban, beat Halep in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in a match lasting over two and a half hours.
It extended Sharapova's winning run over Halep to 7-nil.
Sharapova returned from a 15-month doping ban in April and its her first win over a top 10 player since beating Petra Kvitova in November 2015.
