The New Zealanders dominated the first half and finally converted one of their many goal scoring opportunities just before the break with a Chris Wood strike to take a lead into half time.

It took two late goals from the startled Mexicans to avoid an enormous upset after the world number 17th ranked side trailed the 95th-ranked All Whites at halftime.

New Zealand has never recorded a win at the Confederations Cup.

All Whites captain Chris Wood who scored New Zealand's only goal said they missed to many opportunities in the game.

"We had the chances and at the end of the day we need to take them against good sides like this, they were more clinical than us and thats what let us down."

Wood said he was happy to get the sides first goal of the cup.

"Of course it's nice but i should probably have had two more so I'm disappointed in that, but i will pick myself up for the next game and we will come out even stronger.

"Obviously our goal is to win the next game, we took Mexico all the way and probably should have got a lot more out of this game, so we will test Portugal the same way and hopefully get a win," Wood said.

New Zealand lost 2-0 to Russia in their opening game.

Today's second loss means New Zealand can't reach the semi-finals, regardless of their final group result against unbeaten Portugal on Sunday
