The New Zealand cricket side has suffered a major blow with frontline spinner Mitchell Santner ruled out of the upcoming first test against Pakistan with a fractured wrist.

The left armer was hit on his right wrist, his non-bowling hand, while batting in the nets with Northern Districts ahead of their Plunket Shield match against Canterbury starting tomorrow.

An x-ray showed a fracture, ruling him out of the Christchurch test starting on November 17th and leaving him in doubt for the second.

"After such a strong tour of India, it's really disappointing for Mitch to pick up this injury ahead of the first match of the home summer," said New Zealand coach Mike Hesson.

"We're unsure whether Mitch will be available for the second Test at this stage, but we'll be monitoring his recovery closely and look forward to having him back."
