New Zealand a strong force in badminton singles

The Oceania badminton Championship is underway in Invercargill and after struggling in the team events against Australia, the New Zealand players are putting up a fight in the individual tournament.

The semi-finals get underway today and with three New Zealanders in the men's singles line-up, a local is guaranteed to make the final.

Jessica Jonggowisastro from North Harbour is the only New Zealander in the women's semi's, but after a straight sets win in the quarter-finals she has a strong chance at making the final.

The mixed and doubles draws are still at the quarterfinal stages, but the top New Zealand mixed seeds, Henry Tam and Donna Haliday, are likely to make the finals and the doubles draw has five local pairings.
