South Africa reach 296 in first innings

7:38 pm on 15 February 2010

The South Africa cricketers have been bowled out for 296 in their first innings of the second and final test against India at the Eden Gardens.

The tourosts resumed day two on 266 for 9 and South Africa's last wicket pair of Morne Morkel and Wayne Parnell put on another 30 runs in four overs before left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan claimed the final wicket.

New opening batsman Alviro Petersen hit 100 on debut and in-form Hashim Amla joined him with a century to give South Africa a solid start, but Khan triggered a stunning collapse in which the tourists lost seven wickets in the final session of day 1.

Zaheer finished with four for 90.

India must win this test to hold on to the number one ranking, after South Africa won the first match by an innings win in Nagpur.
