The Chiefs have finished the the opening round of rugby's Super 14 with a 19-18 win over the Sharks in Durban, their first opening round win in six years.
Last year's beaten finalists scored the game's only try, to second-five Jackson Willison, before the Sharks went ahead again with their sixth penalty, only to lose to a Stephen Donald penalty in the last minute.
The Crusaders and the Bulls top the ladder after bonus point wins over the Highlanders in Christchurch and the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.
The other winners were the Hurricanes over the Blues at Albany, the Stormers over the Chief's next opponents, the Lions, in Johannesburg, the ACT Brumbies over the Western Force and the New South Wales Waratahs over the Queensland Reds in Brisbane.
