NZ snowboarders stay in Calgary

New Zealand's five person snowboarding team has delayed its arrival in Vancouver as a lack of snow continues to hamper the preperations for the start of the Winter Olympics this weekend.

The limited snow cover on Cypress Mountain has meant that practice schedules have been reduced for all the competitors and so the snowboarding team has decided to stay at the Calgary Olympic Centre for a couple of extra days.

With the area experiencing one of the warmest winters on record the New Zealand Chef de mission Peter Wardell says Vancouver organisers have been going to extreme lengths... bringing in over 5000 cubic metres of snow using lorries and a helicopter.

High performance director Ashley Light says it hasn't affected the athletes, although they will have to adjust to different snow conditions come competition time.

The games opening ceremony is on Saturday morning.
