The Hyundai driver had climbed as high as second after recording a stage win and four second place finishes in the day's first seven stages.

However a fifth place on the final stage dropped him back to third, 11.4 seconds behind the leader Finland's Jarri-Matti Latvala.

Latvala's Volkswagen team-mate Frenchman Sebastian Ogier is second, 3.5 seconds ahead of Paddon.

The 28-year-old New Zealand driver was second in today's first, second and third stages, fourth in the fourth stage, first in the fifth, third in the sixth, second in the seventh and fifth in the eighth.

There are six stages on tomorrow's third day of racing and three stages on the final day of the rally on Monday (NZ time).

Paddon was fifth in the overall drivers standings heading into Rally Argentina.
