Tom Walsh has defended his national shot put title and shattered his own New Zealand Resident record in Dunedin, outgunning young rival Jacko Gill, who came second.

Walsh recorded an impressive 21.12m throw with his third attempt to claim a seventh successive national title.

Aucklander Gill had held the lead with a heave of 20.22m before Walsh's big third throw.

Gill did manage to better his best distance with a throw of 20.23m but he simply couldn't compete with Timaru born Walsh's winning effort.

24-year-old Walsh and 21-year-old Gill will both compete at the upcoming World Indoor Athletics Championships in a fortnight.

Walsh flies out to Melbourne to compete in the IAAF World Challenge event on Saturday, before heading to Portland Oregon for the World Indoor Championships, while Gill will bypass Melbourne and head straight to the indoor champs in the USA.

Both men have qualified for this year's Rio Olympics.
