The former New Zealand cricketer Chris Cairns has begun defamation procceedings against the Indian Premier League Commissioner regarding allegations of match fixing.

Commissioner Lalit Modi had Cairns name scrubbed from the list of players who registered for this month's IPL player auction amid allegations of a link to alleged match fixing during his time in the rebel Indian Cricket League.

Cairns says the allegations are scandalous and wholly untrue and he's instructed a London solicitor to bring proceedings for defamation against Mr.Modi.

He says for Modi to circulate such a falsehood around the world is outrageous and has caused him huge personal distress and professional damage.
