Suva was considered as an option to host the round 16 game against the Hurricanes at the end of May, with their regular ground in Christchurch being used for an under-20 football World Cup game.

Reports have suggested a backer had offered to underwrite the cost of a match in the Pacific, guaranteeing a profit to both teams.

But players expressed concerns about the added travel burden and taking another home game away from their supporters, with the Crusaders board opting to play the game in Nelson instead.

Fiji international Nemani Nadolo was a key member in the Crusaders team that finished runners-up last season.
