Chelsea dropped points for only the third time this season as Jose Mourinho's side were unable to break down dogged Sunderland, who held the Blues without a goal for the first time in 20 matches in all competitions this season.

The west Londoners are now seven points clear of second placed Southampton.

After three straight losses, Liverpool climb up to 11th on the ladder, following defender Glen Johnson's match-winning header at Anfield.

Arsenal also won 1-0 at West Bromwich Albion and climb to sixth, avoiding their own third straight defeat, while West Ham United are a place behind their London rivals in fifth, after the Hammers edged high-flying Newcastle United by the same score.

The win sees West Ham jump above Newcastle, who had won six straight games.

Manchester United thrashed Hull City 3-0 at Old Trafford to hold onto fourth place, while Leicester City are bottom after a 3-2 loss at fellow strugglers Queen's Park Rangers, who climb to 18th.

Burnley also stay in the relegation zone despite a 1-1 draw with visitors Aston Villa, while Swansea City and Crystal Palace also drew 1-1 in Wales.
