The Pistons' withdrawal is due to a deal with a major sponsor falling through that would've underwritten their season, and the NBL will now run an eight-team league next year.

NBL chairman Sam Rossiter Stead says Waikato Basketball's in good shape but they decided it wouldn't be prudent to run the Pistons by themselves.

The Pistons pulled the plug on their season back in 2012 - Otago, Auckland and Canterbury have also all withdrawn from the league for a short time in recent years.
