The New Zealand Fast5 netball team has been dealt a blow on the eve of the World Series in Auckland with star shooter Irene van Dyk ruled out of the tournament with a back injury.
Van Dyk suffered the injury on Wednesday and is currently under the supervision of the side's medical team.
It's a setback for the 42-year-old, who was due to make her international swansong for the Ferns, who are out to defend their FAST5 title without the skills of the tournament's top shooter Maria Tutaia and inspirational captain Casey Kopua.
Aspiring New Zealand 'A' and Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic shooter Malia Paseka has been called into the squad as van Dyk's replacement.
Van Dyk will remain with the team as technical advisor for the tournament.
Australia, England, South Africa, Jamaica and Malawi are the other teams in this weekend's tournament.
New Zealand are the two-time defending champions.
