The Hawkes Bay rider Fraser Gough has won the third stage of the Tour of Southland.

Gough and four other riders formed a breakaway group which held off the peloton on the 138-kilometre stage from Riverton to Te Anau.

Gough headed home British rider Thomas Stewart with Christchurch's Reon Nolan third.

The Australian rider Ben Hill retains the tour leader's yellow jersey with a 28-second lead heading into Thursday's 187-kilometre fourth stage from Te Anau to the top of Coronet Peak.
