Lewis Hamilton recovered from an agonisingly slow start to win the Italian Grand Prix and slash teammate Nico Rosberg's drivers' championship lead to 22 points.

Rosberg finished second as the dominant Mercedes team celebrated its first one-two since Austria in June and the seventh in 13 races.

The start provided an immediate sensation when pole sitter Hamilton had problems with his car's start mode and he was fourth into the first corner in the wake of Rosberg who took off to a clear lead.

But Hamilton regained the lead on the 29th of 53 laps when Rosberg missed the first chicane for the second time.

Hamilton took the chequered flag 3.1 seconds ahead of Rosberg, followed by the Williams pair Felipe Massa and Valterri Bottas.

There are six rounds remaining.
