Nishikori has a late night in NY

Japanese tennis player Kei Nishikori has upset Canadian Milos Raonic in a five-set late-night marathon at the US Open.

10th-seed Nishikori's epic clash with fifth-seed Raonic began just after 10pm New York time and went for more than four hours, the match finishing past 2am for just the fifth time in tournament history.

The Japanese ended the contest after coming back from two sets to one down when he held serve to eliminate the last remaining Canadian 4-6 7-6 6-7 7-5 6-4.

Nishikori books a quarter-final against the Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka.

The third-seeded Swiss survived two set points to beat Spain's Tommy Robredo in four sets and reach the last eight.

Top seed Novak Djokovic reached the quarter-finals of a grand slam for the 22nd straight time, after beating Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Djokovic will meet Andy Murray in the New York quarter-finals, the Scot easily beating Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

On the women's side, Serbian qualifier Alexandra Krunic threatened a big upset, taking the first set off Vika Azarenka before losing in three.

The Belarussian goes on to play Russia's Ekaterina Makarova in the quarter-finals, who ended Canadian seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard's run.
