Black Caps captain Daniel Vettori fell agonisingly short of a fifth Test century on a rain-interrupted second day of the opening test between New Zealand and Pakistan in Dunedin.
Vettori, who started the day on 40, was caught behind by Kamran Akmal off the bowling off Umar Gul for 99.
Earlier, he had shared in a seventh-wicket stand of 164 with wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum who made 78.
The home side were offered the light one ball after Vettori's dismissal and closed the day on 404 for 8.
Only 14 minutes play were possible after lunch before rain intervened and delayed proceedings for three-and-a-half hours.
When the teams returned, Vettori moved into the 90s but looked tentative thereafter and was fortunate to survive when he edged Gul between Akmal and Imran Farhat at first slip.
But Gul would strike 10 balls later, enticing the left-handed into a thick edge that was collected by the wicketkeeper.
The New Zealanders accepted the light one ball later, with Iain O'Brien two not out and Shane Bond, who was the subject of a failed referral by the tourists when an lbw appeal off Gul was turned down, unbeaten on eight.
