US star Landon Donovan retires

Landon Donovan, the United States' all-time top scorer, will retire from football at the end of the current Major League Soccer season.

Donovan played primarily for the Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes during his 16-year careerand became the face of the US national team.

The 32-year-old issued a retirement statement on the LA Galaxy's website and says his gut told him its time to end his career.

He says he's felt his desire for playing abate and that it was time to move on.

The forward scored 57 goals in 156 games for the US national team but was controversially left off the 2014 World Cup squad earlier this year.
