Newcastle open the 4-team series against Sydney FC in Dunedin tonight.

Pardew wants this trip to be a step in his long-term aim of playing in the Champions League.

He also says Newcastle are using the New Zealand tour to rediscover their attacking brand of football which wasn't evident ilast season.

He says they won't be taking Sydney lightly as he's sure they'll be out to prove something against two EPL teams.

Pardew doesn't see these two matches as pre-season warmup games... instead they'll provide game time for younger players and help the senior players to cement their tatics for the season.

The Phoenix play West Ham in Auckland tomorrow night.
