South Africa's pace bowlers Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel ripped through the Sri Lanka batting lineup to seal a 153-run win in the first cricket test in Galle and give Hashim Amla a winning start to his captaincy.

Steyn and Morkel shared eight wickets as the Proteas dismissed their hosts for 216 shortly before the tea break to seal their first win in Sri Lanka for 14 years.

Sri Lanka had started the final day on 110 for one.

Steyn ended with nine wickets for 99 to take the man of the match award.

The second Test starts in Colombo on Sunday.
