Lewis Hamilton has won his home Grand Prix, slashing his team-mate Nico Rosberg's Formula One championship lead to just four points after the German retired for the first time this season.

Hamilton, who last won at Silverstone in his 2008 championship year, has now won five races this year and there are 10 rounds remaining in the season.

Finland's Valtteri Bottas finished second for Williams, his second successive podium and career-best finish, and the Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo was third for Red Bull. Making up the top six were Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso.

The race was red-flagged almost as soon as it started after Ferrari's 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen crashed, leaving him limping to the medical centre with a sore ankle but otherwise unscathed.

There was disappointment for the Brazilian Felipe Massa, whose 200th race start didn't even last a lap when he took evasive action and bounced off the carriers.
