Neither team could break the deadlock during extra time, sending the match to penalties.

The Dutch substitute goalkeeper goalkeeper Tim Krul, introduced just for the shootout, saved from Bryan Ruiz and Michael Umana as the Netherlands triumphed 4-3.

The Netherlands will face Argentina in the semi-finals after the South Americans beat Belgium 1-nil in this morning's earlier quarter-final.

Hosts Brazil play Germany in the other semi-final.
