In an encouraging sign for this month's Commonwealth Games, the New Zealand swimmer Lauren Boyle has won the 800 metres freestyle on the first day of the French Open Championships in Vichy.

Four days after coming down from a three-week altitude training camp in Spain, Boyle clocked 8:22.93 to win the event in a French Championship record time, and the fourth fastest in the world this year.

She returned to the pool eight minutes later to finish fifth in the 200 freestyle final.

Team-mate Matthew Stanley also finished third in the final of the men's 400 freestyle.
