The Olympic and world champion, New Zealand's Valerie Adams, has won her 50th consecutive shot put event with her latest success coming at the Diamond League meeting in New York.

Adams threw 19.68 metres to win by 17 centimetres from American Michelle Carter.

Carter opened with a very good 19.51 metres and it took Adams until round four to edge in front.

Adams' 50 wins in succession is the longest current winning streak in international athletics.

The last time Adams suffered defeat was in August 2010.

She now has a virtually unassailable lead in the Diamond League contest, with 12 points after three rounds from three athletes tied for second on two points.

Meanwhile fellow New Zealanders Nikki Hamblin finished eighth in the 3000 metres in New York.
