Hosts Brazil recovered from an own goal to open their football World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Croatia in Sao Paulo after being awarded a controversial penalty to take the go ahead lead.

The Brazilian defender Marcelo deflected a cross into his own net to open the scoring in the tournament's opening match before star striker Neymar equalised for the hosts.

The 22-year-old then calmly slotted a spot kick to give Brazil a 2-1 lead after team-mate Fred milked a dubious penalty in the Croatia box.

Oscar then put the result beyond doubt with a stoppage time strike to ensure the host nation has still never lost an opening match at a World Cup.
