Alker wins in Cleveland

The Hamilton golfer Steven Alker has won the Cleveland Open on the second tier Web.Com tour in the United States.

However it took an 11 hole play-off for him to beat South African Dawie van der Walt, equalling the longest playoff in PGA history.

The win earns him $127,000 and is his first on the Tour this year.

It comes just a week after qualifying for this week's US Open at Pinehurst and Alker says the gruelling 36-hole qualifying tournament prepared him for the 29 holes at the Cleveland Open.

The victory will moves Alker into the top 12 on the money list.

Meanwhile Auckland's Lydia Ko has finished in a two-way tie for fourth at the LPGA tournament in Canada, finishing 7 shots behind world number one Inbee Park of South Korea.
