Second-half strikes from Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney secured United's victory which keeps them two points behind Chelsea who sit on 27 points after a 4-0 win at 10-man Bolton Wanderers.
Arsenal are third on 22 points after a 3-0 win over fourth-placed north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, while nine-man Liverpool, in fifth, slipped nine points behind Chelsea after losing 3-1 at Fulham.
Bottom-club Portsmouth celebrated their second win of the season with a 4-0 thrashing of Wigan Athletic to move them level on seven points with West Ham United who drew 2-2 at Sunderland.
