Normal service resumed on day five at the French Open tennis tournament after a string of upsets the previous day in Paris.

Rafael Nadal passed his second-round test with flying colours on Thursday, with a straight sets win over the talented Dominic Thiem, a gifted 20-year-old who's the youngest player in the ATP's top 100.

After the match Nadal applauded the youngster for his effort in testing the eight-times champion more than the 6-2 6-2 6-3 scoreline suggested.

Thiem stunned the world No.3 Stan Wawrinka in the second round of the Madrid Masters earlier this month.

Other highly ranked players including David Ferrer, Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet advanaced to the third round.

After the shock exits of the Williams sisters, among others, the 15th seed Sloane Stephens raised American morale by joining her teenage compatriot Taylor Townsend in the third round.
