Sri Lanka's embarrassing collapse came just days after they had themselves dismissed England for a slightly less humiliating 99 in the second ODI at Chester-le-Street on Monday.
The total was Sri Lanka's third lowest in one-day internationals and their worst in England, after they were previously bowled out for 86 as a then non-Test nation by the West Indies, also at Old Trafford, during the 1975 World Cup.
Sri Lanka's previous worst against England was the 99 they made in Perth in 1999.
Sri Lanka posted only three double-figure scores, Kumar Sangakkara top-scoring with 13.
England then raced to victory, chasing down the total in less than 13 overs for the loss of no wickets, finishing on 73 for none to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
