Cherry-Evans to step up after Cronk injury

The Queensland rugby league halfback Cooper Cronk is likely to have surgery today after suffering a suspected broken arm in Wednesday night's 12-8 loss to New South Wales in the first State of Origin match in Brisbane.

Cronk suffered the injury tackling NSW second-rower Ryan Hoffman in the 10th minute of Origin I.

If Queensland are to bounce back and seal a ninth straight State of Origin series win, understudy Daly Cherry-Evans will have to step up and embrace the role he appeared destined for - the Maroons' star halfback.

New South Wales captain Paul Gallen says Cherry-Evans is an able replacement in great form and was bouncing forwards off him.

He's the NRL's form halfback but Cherry-Evans will have to translate that form to Origin if the Maroons are to wrestle their way back into the series with a win in Sydney in three weeks.
