7:07 am on 27 May 2014

The men's second seed Novak Djokovic has opened his bid for a maiden French Open tennis title with a 6-1 6-2 6-4 win over Portugal's Joao Sousa.

The six-time Grand Slam winner needs the Roland Garros title to complete his set of all four majors, and he started his tournament in style after coming off a superb week in Italy where he beat Rafael Nadal in the Rome Masters final.

Djokovic now meets the home player Jeremy Chardy for a place in the last 32.

The 9th seed Kei Nishikori from Japan lost in straight sets to the unseeded Slovakian Martin Klizan.

Rain delayed the start of play for an hour, and there've been more interruptions since.

New Zealand's Marina Erakovic has yet to play her opening match.
