Veteran Bjorn sets Wentworth course record

6:38 am on 24 May 2014

The veteran Danish golfer Thomas Bjorn posted a sizzling 10-under par 62 to take a two-stroke lead on the opening day of the European Tour's flagship event, the British PGA championship, on the Wentworth estate in Surrey where he lived for nine years.

43-year-old Bjorn's timing was impeccable as he finished his round just before a torrential downpour forced play to be suspended for the day because of a threat of lightning.

The Dane has a two-shot lead over Ireland's Shane Lowry.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, in the news earlier this week following a split with his fiancee Caroline Wozniacki, was 4-under par after 12 holes when rain ended play for the day.
