Danish golfer Thomas Bjorn has been joined by Ireland's Shane Lowry at the top of the leaderboard after two rounds of the European Tour's flagship event, the European PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Lowry shot a two under par 70 to match Bjorn's 10-under par lead, after the Dane hit a par 72 to go with his first-round course record of 62 in challenging conditions.

Winds gusted at up to 29 kilometres per hour and spectators sought to avoid the driving rain at every opportunity.

Bjorn and Lowry are four strokes ahead of a trio including Englishman Luke Donald.

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, still hurting after scrapping his planned wedding to Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, posted a one under par 71 to share sixth place, five off the pace.
