Investigation clears top NRL official over Tandy betting

An independent investigation has dismissed an allegation that a top official at Australia's National Rugby League was made aware but ignored evidence that former Canterbury Bulldogs forward Ryan Tandy was betting on matches.

The investigation has found no reliable evidence that the NRL's head of football Todd Greenberg was told of the gambling problems of Tandy.

The ABC said that John Schell, a jockey agent, had presented evidence on his phone of the player's bets on NRL matches and horse races to Greenberg, then Canterbury chief executive, as well as the Sydney team's football manager Alan Thompson.

The meeting, according to the report, occurred only days before a 2010 match against North Queensland, which Tandy was found guilty of attempting to fix and subsequently banned for life from the sport.

Tandy, was found dead last month at his parents' house having suffered an apparent drug overdose. He was 32.
