Wellington Phoenix 15, Shane Smeltz 10 as Nix knock 6

After six straight draws, the Phoenix have returned to winning ways in Australian football's A-League, thrashing high-flying Gold Coast United by a club record 6-0 scoreline in Wellington.

The All Whites striker Shane Smeltz's return to his old club wasn't a happy one - his every touch was booed before the Phoenix struck first.

Gold Coast trailed 1-0 at half-time.

The visitors conceded shortly after the break then the Phoenix compounded their misery with three more goals in six minutes and a sixth goal near the end.

The record win for the Wellington club moves them off the bottom of the table and up to 7th. Gold Coast drop to third and Sydney go top after beating Brisbane 2-1.

Melbourne are second.
