The English Premier League's chief executive Richard Scudamore has apologised for his "inappropriate" emails containing sexist language that were leaked to a Sunday newspaper in Britain by his former PA.

Scudamore apologised in a statement for causing any offence to a former employee, emphasising that the emails were private exchanges between colleagues and old friends.

The head of the most lucrative football league in the world faces accusations of hypocrisy, having regularly championed equality for women in football.
