Thousands of fans and Formula One drivers past and present gathered at Italy's Imola race track to commemorate the death of the great Ayrton Senna 20 years ago.

Senna, a three-time world champion, died on May 1, 1994 aged 34 when he lost control of his Williams-Renault car in the San Marino Grand Prix and crashed into a wall.

Family members, former team-mates such as Gerhard Berger and Mika Hakkinen, and current Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen were among those who attended ceremony.

Berger says the drivers are virtually unanimous that the dashing Brazilian was the best driver of all time.

Roland Ratzenberger, who died in a qualifying accident the day before Senna, was also remembered.
