The Giz wins at Pukekohe

5:45 pm on 26 April 2014

Shane van Gisbergen's raced past fellow New Zealander Scott McLaughlin to record his fifth career V8s win in Saturday's second V8 Supercars race at Pukekohe.

The Cantabrian McLaughlin started on pole in his Volvo, with Aucklander van Gisbergen fourth on the grid - but the Holden man stormed through the field, pulling past McLaughlin on the eighth lap.

And van Gisbergen stayed there, while McLaughlin couldn't hold onto second either - and race one winner Mark Winterbottom almost snatched it from van Gisbergen, the Australian finishing just 0.2 of a second behind.

The man known as "Frosty" takes over the championship lead from Craig Lowndes.

Earlier Winterbottom became just the third Ford driver to win a race at Pukekohe since 2001. McLaughlin was sixth there, and van Gisbergen fifth.

In the curtain-raiser, Holden legend Greg Murphy clinched the local V8s Super Tourer series with his 21st race win.

There's one more V8s Supercars race tomorrow at Pukekohe, a 200-kilometre endurance feature.
