Ryder to play cricket in England

7:53 am on 23 April 2014

The England county cricket side Essex has signed former New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder for the 2014 season.

The troubled Black Cap is expected to play a part in all three formats of the game.

The Essex chief executive, Derek Bowden, says while they're aware of Ryder's history of ill-discipline and alcohol related problems they believe he'll fit perfectly into their side.

Bowden believes Essex will provide the 29-year-old with an ideal environment in which to resurrect his international career.

He says Essex have already laid down the law with Ryder, making him well aware of the club's zero tolerance policy towards any off field indiscretions.

Ryder is waiting on visa approval, but should arrive in England next month.
