Kirwan says Blues players must work harder

The impending departure of Benji Marshall might not be a great loss for the Blues, but it appears the Super Rugby franchise has bigger problems.

Former All Black halfback Piri Weepu, who should be available for selection this week after returning from a minor stroke and heart surgery, blasted the Blues players after Friday night's loss to the Hurricanes, questioning his team-mates' desire to win and they're commitment to franchise.

The Blues have won just three of their eight games this season and have been comprehensively beaten in their last two games, their losing streak away from home now 12 matches.

Coach Sir John Kirwan says Weepu's comments are fair.

The Blues sit 11th on the overall ladder and another loss would all but kill off their playoff aspirations.
