Dixon loses Indy Car title by narrowest of margins

Dario Franchitti has won the IndyCar Series season title for the second time in three years after capturing the Indy 300, using a fuel strategy to win the first caution-free race in IndyCar history.

The pole-sitting Scotsman trailed defending series and race champion Scott Dixon of New Zealand and Australian Ryan Briscoe, his rivals for the title, most of the way in the 200-lap season-ending oval showdown.

But Dixon was forced to refuel with eight laps remaining and Briscoe went to the pits for ethanol a lap later, leaving Franchitti to take the checkered flag after saving enough fuel to need only three pit stops in the race.

It was the fifth race win of the season for Franchitti, who ran out of the fuel while celebrating moments after the finish.

Franchitti won the 2007 title when Dixon ran out of fuel on the last lap and departed IndyCar for a struggle-filled US stock car season in 2008, when Dixon won the title.

Franchitti won the season crown by 11 points over Dixon and 12 over Briscoe.
