Dixon 12th in latest IndyCar race

The New Zealand driver Scott Dixon has finished a disappointing 12th in the second Indy Car race of the year in California after a failed fuel strategy cost the defending champion dearly.

Taking the lead after a restart 65 laps into the 80 lap race Dixon was still in front with three laps to go, but was forced to pit on the penultimate lap after running out of fuel.

The pit stop causing Dixon to slip to 12th.

Britain's Mike Conway won the race, with Australian Will Power second and Colombian Carlos Munoz third.

Power leads the drivers standings with 93 points, 27 points clear of Conway.

Dixon sits 6th overall, 42 points behind Power.
