All Whites name team for first leg world cup playoff

7:06 pm on 29 September 2009

The All Whites coach Ricki Herbert's unveiled his most important squad yet in his four years in charge of the New Zealand football side, naming a 19 strong lineup play Bahrain for a place at the world cup.

The only player unvailable for the two leg play off is goalkeeper Glenn Moss who's on a four match world cup suspension, he earned in final Oceania playoff match against Fiji last year.

Ryan Nelsen will captain the side that's relatively unchanged from the squad that earned a 3-1 victory over Jordan in Amman earlier this month.

Striker Rory Fallon and midfielder Michael McGlinchey retain their places after making their debuts in that game while Chris Killen and Chris Wood come back into the mix having recovered from injury.

Nelsen, McGlinchey, Fallon and goalkeeper Jacob Spoonley are the only players in the squad who didn't travel to South Africa for the FIFA Confederations Cup in June.

The full team is:

Goalkeepers: James Bannatyne, Mark Paston, Jacob Spoonley.

Defenders: Andrew Boyens, Tony Lochead, David Mulligan, Ryan Nelsen (captain),

Aaron Scott, Ben Sigmund, Ivan Vicelich.

Midfielders: Andy Barron, Leo Bertos, Tim Brown, Simon Elliott, Michael McGlinchey.

Forwards: Rory Fallon, Chris Killen, Shane Smeltz, Chris Wood.
